How to Expand or shorten a phrase to convert

Since there is no space between words in a Japanese sentence,
IME often converts the phrase that is different from you mean.
In the above case, for example, your IME converted KYOUIKU into 教育 (education) as one phrase,
but you want to type KYOU / IKU 今日/行く (I will go today) as two phrases.
You can tell your IME that KYOU is the phrase by [Shift] + [Left] or [Right] keys.
